  • Sustainability is the emerging operational framework for all activity organization in the 21st Century. This is as true for industry and the private sector as it is for all levels of government, and concerned citizens and volunteer groups. And oh yes! We have in fact no choice. .

Born in Mississippi and educated in New England and Europe with a broad background in the physical sciences, economics and public policy, Eric Britton founded EcoPlan in 1966 to provide a for-profit independent international forum of observation, reflection and counsel on issues involving technological change as it affects people, that's you and me, in our day to day lives.

The principal challenge of his work lies in scanning and organizing incomplete information and insights on complex technical and socio-economic topics so that informed decisions can be taken, for better or worse, in an ever-moving complex world rife with contradictions, conflicting interests and more forms of prejudice and denial than even God could shake a stick at. His time is divided between strategic planning and advisory assignments with the private sector, and extensive pro bono work in the public and volunteer sectors.

A common theme in all his work is informing the strategic adaptation of technologies, products, services, business practices, and institutional structures to changing technological, resource and environmental requirements and perceptions. The vehicle for his extensive public interest work is an open public collaborative which he founded in the seventies as, what he then called, an "invisible college". Today it is called The Commons and is well worth a visit.

Throughout a distinguished international career he has initiated, participated in and carried to completion a wide range of advisory assignments aimed at providing decision counsel to government, business and the volunteer sector in many parts of the world on thorny issues of technology, economy and society. And behind it all, the unrelenting bottom-line challenges of sustainable development, sustainable lives and social justice.

Eric earns his living as an international consultant, advisor and hands-on problem-solver for government, industry and the volunteer sector. He strongly believes that sustainability is the emerging operational framework for activity organization in the 21st Century, private and public sector alike. And he also is sadly aware that we are thus far not doing very well with this challenge in most places. And that now is the time to start.

He has developed this site with an eye to helping in organizing his work program and associations for the period 2006-2015, and as a testimonial of his confidence that these technologies really do work. If only we can get them right.
